Clinical social Workers /

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers

There are different ways to obtain qualifications and accreditation to become a mental health professional who provides support and clinical interventions for individuals experiencing emotional and mental health challenges. In addition to Psychologists, Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSW) are clinicians and/or psychotherapists with a clinical social work background.

Same as Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers are eligible for Medicare rebates. Some are trained in the same range of therapeutic approaches as Psychologists. The governing body for Social Workers is Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), which is recognised by the Federal Government to provide mental health services and psychological therapy. Mental Health Social Workers are able to provide individual, couples and/or family therapies.

Similar to Psychologists, Mental Health Social Workers are able to assist with assessment and treatment of psychological disorders. In fact, Mental Health Social Workers often take a wholistic approach. They are experienced in helping clients improve their emotional wellbeing by addressing psychological factors, while identifying and addressing any external stressors and issues that affect one’s welling, such as social connections, family structure and social systems etc.
